Uptown

How you choose to set about exploring this dynamic area is your first challenge as there are many options for shopping, dining and playing. Let’s start at Broadway and 27th Street, the entry point to the Uptown neighborhood. For style, try menswear purveyor Two Jacks Denim with its high-quality, made in the USA menswear and Owl N Wood, featuring clothing and accessories for women and men. And don’t feel like you have to stay on the beaten track. On several streets just off of Broadway you’ll find an urban winery, the gorgeously renovated Fox Theater, restaurants, art galleries, a cinema-pub and more. Oakland Central is a great way to unearth all of the activities that go on in this neighborhood.

Downtown & Old Town

The streets in downtown are finding resurgence where you can discover creative cocktails at Penelope Bar & Lounge, restaurants like Tribune Tavern and fashion-forward boutiques like Viscera. Head down a few more blocks to the architectural wonders of Old Oakland to score seriously good food in Swans Market, plus shop at some of the best indie stores in the city. Get inspired at charming home store Marion & Rose’s Workshop or stop by the artisan jewelry shop, Crown Nine for locally-made accessories. And travel the world among the treasures in Umami Mart, the Japanese-inspired barware shop that will take your own cocktails up a notch, whether they’re stirred or shaken.

Jack London Square

Finally, as you head south down the last five blocks of Broadway with the water right in front of you, you’ll enter Jack London Square, one of the most scenic areas in Oakland. This is a great place to snack your way through a visit. Save room for the delectable pastries at Miette Patisserie; share a wood-fired pizza from Forge, or try the Dungeness crab deviled eggs on the patio at Boca Nova. For groups in search of serious fun, stop into Plank where you can play bocce ball in the outdoor beer garden or head inside for bowling and arcade fun.

Each area is easily accessible via car, bike or public transportation, with a mix of on-street, private and public parking garages. So Explore the Heart of Oakland!
